Here’s some tips for creating a superhuman punch with supreme knockout power. What do you think a superhuman punch sounds like? Is it a long drawn-out “BAM”? Listen to your sound and think about what type of movement it has. Likely you will envision a subtle arch, where the center of your sound peaks and falls down again.
Does that picture make you think of a superhuman punch, or a punch that starts off okay, has a strong center, and then dies off at the end?
I want you to think of the most powerful punch as moving and sounding like the speed of light. In Bruce Lee’s movies, the sounds he evokes are quite different from your “BAM!”
They sound more like “WAH-KAHHHHHHHHHHH!” Visualize that sound and you may see something that curves into a backward “s”, with a tail that flies with powerful force. Now think about what type of punch follows that sound and movement. Likely much more powerful that one that you get with “BAM!”
A superhuman punch reaches a torquing point, where it accelerates toward a more powerful and faster motion. If you can recreate sound and internalize it, it’s much easier to simulate the punch of Bruce Lee. You can amp it up more with emotion.
The sounds that Bruce Lee makes are already fast. Take note of whether you here any tension? You shouldn’t because there is none. How much tension do you hear in “BAM”? It’s full of tension that inhibits your ability to throw your most powerful jab.
Practice your sounds with movement. Really visualize what you want your punches to sound like and put that sound into action. You will increase the power of your punch instantaneously.
